The studio is likely to want to expedite the project as much as possible. And since we’ve seen over the last few years that audiences will still show up for (well-reviewed) old-school movies like Interstellar, Baby Driver, Knives Out, Hustlers and Ford v Ferrari with A) all-star ensembles, B) appealing hooks and C) a (relatively speaking) marquee director, there is still potential in this rather unique series. Given that Now You See Me two was released over four years ago. And while there is a chance that the third time won’t be a charm, the franchise’s core hook (criminal magicians) and the core cast (again, provided they wish to return) will still be intact. Yes, that was a decline, but the most of the other sequels that summer ( The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Independence Day: Resurgence, Star Trek Beyond, etc.) wished they could have earned “only” 95.5% of their predecessor’s global gross. However, it earned $94 million in China (the film’s second act took place in Macau with a major supporting role for Jay Chou) for a $335 million cume on a $100 million budget. The sequel, with a pregnant Fisher swapped out for Lizzy Caplan and brought back supporting characters played by Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine while adding Daniel Radcliffe as the baddie, earned just $65 million domestic. Now You See Me, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Ilsa Fisher, Dave Franco and Woody Harrelson as stage magicians who pull off heists during their shows (and Mark Ruffalo as the cop chasing them), earned $118 million domestic in the summer of 2013 and a whopping $351 million worldwide on a $75 million budget. It is an entirely original high-concept, star-driven studio programmer that offered two consecutive $300 million-plus grossers.
